EMBRACING THE DIGITAL REACH: CHALLENGES, LESSONS LEARNED, & MOVING FORWARD

There is no denying 2020 has been a wake-up call for our industry. From oil prices plunging into the negatives to operations and international travel being ground to a halt and entire workforces relocated to their homes, we have quickly learned that by embracing technology, we can persevere.

The term “digital reach” is synonymous with marketing agencies and how they utilize social media to engage audiences and enhance visibility. This term is no longer reserved solely for this industry. Rather, 2020 has proven to be a period for the unlikeliest of sectors to extend their digital reach in effort to engage with customers and staff alike. The petroleum industry is one such division that has embraced this head-on by applying remote capabilities, digitization, analytics, software, and satellite comms/bandwidth to its advantage to overcome our present challenges and remote-capability hurdles. AUVs are already deployed for extended periods, with remote data download and charging stations in development. Many drill floors are being monitored remotely with oversight from the beach. The “digital reach” continues to grow as remote and autonomous operations are stimulated by the recent challenges.

For APSG 44, we are looking for papers where companies in our industry have embraced the ‘digital reach’ and are willing to discuss the hardships fought, lessons learned, and advancements for the future amongst your peers.

We ask that you submit abstracts to Chris Echols at chair@apsg.info by Monday, September 31, 2020. If you have any questions as to the context of this theme or if your idea falls in line, please reach out.
