Founded in November 1998, the Americas Petroleum Survey Group (APSG) is an unincorporated association of individuals. Members include experts in geomatics, surveying, positioning, geospatial data management, and mapping sciences from E&P companies, oilfield service companies, survey contractors, consultants, and academia. APSG is well regarded for its industry leadership, educational programs, and professional networking.

2010-2011 was a year of significant growth for APSG, during which time membership of our organization grew and we also established our first chapter in Denver. Going forward from here, I believe that we now need to focus on strengthening our organization and continuing to offer true value for all our members. A key area of concern to all of us is that the demographics of our profession are in poor shape. We can play a role in trying to turn this around, through energizing the next generation of surveyors, geomaticians and GIS professionals (and of course APSG members).

Ensuring that our data is spatially correct is of course a core value to all of us. We must not forget however that many of our clients require spatial data for analysis or to aid with a decision. This is an area where I think we should focus in the next year and explore data acquisition techniques and also data presentation tools. Through both of these areas, we can add significant value to the data and also our profession as we ensure that our clients have correct data which enables a more efficient and effective decision.
